Elche

Elche, or Elx (as it is known in Valencian) is located on the Costa Blanca and is surrounded by more than 300.000 palm trees.

Elche encompasses the entire range of attractions that the province has to offer its visitors: pre-history, history, natural riches, beaches and the influence of its citizens on culture and traditions are all elements that are worthy of note in this modern, thriving and growing city.

Places to visit: The Palace of Altamira, the Citadel of the Sentoría, the Ayuntamiento, the Moorish baths and the Convent of the Mercé (they are all located within a short distance of each other).

The most spectacular and outstanding attraction in Elche is its Palmeral: it is the most extensive orchard of palm trees, declared a Treasure to Humanity by Unesco.

Although Elche can be visited at any time throughout the year, the best period to visit the city is during the month of August when it celebrates fiestas in honour of the Virgin of the Assumption. A medieval lyrical and religious mystery play, the Misteri, is performed at this time and is an event that has been recently declared a World Heritage Event by Unesco. There are to acts, the Vesprà and the Festa, and the play is performed on the 14th and 15th of August in the Basilica of Santa María (St. Mary).

Distance: La Marina to Elche (Elx) is 8.9 Km and taxes approximately 15 minutes by car. Take the N332, direction Alicante, take the first exist, direction Elx, road number CV853, this road will take you directly into the city.
